Dubai Municipality’s technical guidance on Legionella control in water systems requires potable water storage tanks to be cleaned and disinfected with 50 mg/L chlorine at least twice a year.
The Food Code goes further for food premises: water must come from DEWA or another licensed and authorised commercial supplier, potable and non-potable systems must remain separate, tanks must be covered and maintained clean, and cleaning must be carried out by an approved company with records retained. Periodic water testing is also expected.
Why it affects delivered water
This is the part worth internalising if you buy tanker water. Water quality is not determined solely at the point of supply. It is determined by the whole chain: source, tanker, hose, and the tank it lands in.
Sediment, biofilm and standing water in a neglected tank will affect fresh water within hours of it arriving. Customers occasionally report that delivered water “smells”; in our experience the receiving tank is the more likely explanation than the load.

What proper cleaning involves
A competent clean is more than a rinse. It normally covers draining, removing sediment, scrubbing internal surfaces, disinfecting at the specified chlorine concentration, an adequate contact period, thorough rinsing, and inspection of the cover, seals and any insect screening before refilling.
The cover matters more than people expect. An unsealed or damaged tank lid is a direct route for dust, insects and contamination between cleans.
