In Dubai heat, curing is not a finishing touch — it is the difference between the concrete reaching its design strength and not. And the water you cure with has to be as clean as the water you mixed with.
Curing water rule
Curing water should meet the same quality standard as mixing water: fresh sweet water, low in chlorides and sulphates.
TSE and salt water are not curing water.

Why curing matters more here
Concrete gains strength through hydration, which needs moisture. In 45°C heat with low humidity and wind, a fresh slab loses surface moisture fast — sometimes faster than the hydration reaction can use it.
The result is surface crazing, reduced strength at the surface, and a slab that is more permeable than designed. In a coastal chloride environment, a permeable surface is exactly what you do not want protecting reinforcement.
Why curing water quality matters
Curing water sits on and soaks into the surface of the concrete. Contaminants in that water end up in the surface layer — the layer that is supposed to protect the steel below.
Using saline or treated effluent water for curing introduces chlorides and other contaminants directly into the cover zone. It defeats the purpose of having specified clean mixing water in the first place. Mixing water requirements are covered here.
Planning the volume
Curing demand varies with method — ponding, wet hessian, continuous sprinkling or curing compound all use very different quantities. Ponding a large slab uses a lot; a curing membrane uses almost none.
Where wet curing is specified, plan sweet water deliveries around the pour schedule rather than ordering reactively. A pour that cannot be cured on time is an expensive problem.

Never cure with TSE
Treated effluent is appropriate for dust suppression, not for contact with fresh concrete surfaces. Keep the two supplies and their storage separate.
Why curing water is not optional in Dubai
Concrete gains strength through hydration, and hydration needs water present in the mix while it cures. In Dubai conditions — high temperature, low humidity, wind — surface water evaporates far faster than the reaction consumes it.
Lose that moisture too early and you get reduced surface strength, plastic shrinkage cracking, and a slab that dusts and wears badly. None of it is repairable by adding water later; the strength was simply never developed.
Budget curing water separately
Curing water is planned as an afterthought more often than any other site water requirement. On a large slab in a Dubai summer it can exceed the mixing water.
Methods and how long to continue
Several approaches are used, often in combination. Continuous wetting or ponding for slabs, wet hessian kept damp for elements where ponding is impractical, and curing compounds where wet curing cannot be maintained.
The critical point with wet methods is continuity. Hessian that is allowed to dry out is worse than not using it, because the alternating wet and dry cycles stress the surface. If a method cannot be maintained through the weekend, choose one that can.
Duration depends on the mix and the specification, but the early days matter most, and summer conditions shorten the window in which damage is done. Water has to be on site and scheduled before the pour, not sourced afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
What water should be used for curing concrete?
Fresh sweet water meeting the same quality standard as mixing water — low in chlorides and sulphates.
Can TSE water be used for curing?
No. TSE is suitable for dust suppression and compaction, not for contact with curing concrete.
Why is curing so important in Dubai?
High heat, low humidity and wind dry a fresh surface faster than hydration can use the moisture, reducing strength and increasing permeability.
How much water does curing need?
It depends entirely on method. Ponding uses a great deal, curing membranes almost none. Plan around the specified method.
Can I use the same water for mixing and curing?
Yes, and you should. Both require the same quality standard.
Why is concrete curing water so important in Dubai?
High temperature, low humidity and wind evaporate surface water faster than hydration consumes it, causing reduced strength and shrinkage cracking that cannot be repaired later.
How long should concrete be cured?
It depends on the mix and specification, but the early days matter most. Continuity matters more than method — hessian allowed to dry out is worse than not using it.
