Imperial vs us gallons - Water Tankers Dubai guide

The Imperial vs US gallons question sounds pedantic until you realise it can change a Dubai water tanker load by roughly 20% — on two quotes advertising exactly the same number.

The difference

  • 1 Imperial gallon = 4.546 litres
  • 1 US gallon = 3.785 litres
  • A 5,000 gallon load is therefore either 22,730 L or 18,927 L

Which gallon does Dubai use?

In practice, most established Dubai water tanker suppliers quote in Imperial gallons, and DEWA engineering documentation explicitly uses Imperial gallons. That is the safer default assumption.

The problem is that advertising rarely says which. A page offering “5,000 gallons from AED 300” is not necessarily quoting the same product as one offering “5,000 gallons from AED 350”.

Imperial vs US gallons conversion by tanker size

AdvertisedImperial (litres)US (litres)Difference
1,000 gal4,546 L3,785 L761 L
1,500 gal6,819 L5,678 L1,141 L
2,500 gal11,365 L9,464 L1,901 L
5,000 gal22,730 L18,927 L3,803 L
10,000 gal45,460 L37,854 L7,606 L
15,000 gal68,190 L56,781 L11,409 L

At 10,000 gallons the gap is over 7,600 litres — more than an entire small tanker load.

Why it matters for your order

Two practical consequences. First, price comparison: a quote that looks 15% cheaper may simply be 20% less water. Second, sizing: if you calculated your tank in Imperial gallons but the supplier delivers US gallons, you can come up short and need an unplanned second trip.

If you are calculating tank or pool volume yourself, our tanker size guide uses the Imperial conversion (cubic metres × 220).

Want your quote in litres?

We are happy to state volume in litres on any quotation. Ask and it is on the message.

Comparing quotes properly

Convert everything to AED per litre delivered. Then check three things are equivalent: the water type, whether VAT is included, and whether pump, hose and reasonable waiting time are covered.

Our price guide covers the six factors that legitimately move a quote, so you can tell a genuinely better rate from an apparently better one.

The one question to ask

“Can you confirm the volume in litres?”

It takes one message, it removes the ambiguity entirely, and a supplier who will not answer it plainly has told you something useful.

Three mistakes this causes

Ordering short and paying for a second trip

The most expensive version of this mistake: you calculate a 4,000 gallon tank in Imperial, order “4,000 gallons” from a supplier quoting US gallons, and receive about 15,140 litres against the 18,184 you needed. The tank is three-quarters full and a second trip costs more than the difference ever saved.

Comparing a cheaper quote that is not cheaper

Two suppliers quote 10,000 gallons. One asks AED 600, the other AED 520. The second looks 13% better. If the first is Imperial (45,460 L) and the second is US (37,854 L), the real rates are AED 0.0132 and AED 0.0137 per litre — the “cheaper” quote is actually slightly more expensive per litre delivered.

Sizing a pool fill from the wrong figure

Pool volume calculations in Dubai normally use the Imperial conversion (cubic metres × 220). If you then order in US gallons, you will be roughly a fifth short — and a partly filled pool cannot simply be left overnight without affecting the finish and the plant.

Quick reference

  • Cubic metres × 220 = Imperial gallons
  • Cubic metres × 264 = US gallons
  • Imperial gallons × 4.546 = litres
  • US gallons × 3.785 = litres
  • Imperial gallons × 1.2 ≈ US gallons

If you only remember one thing: an Imperial gallon is about 20% larger than a US gallon. Any quote that does not state which is being used is a quote you cannot compare.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Dubai water tanker gallon Imperial or US?

Most established Dubai suppliers quote Imperial gallons, and DEWA engineering documentation uses Imperial gallons. But advertisements frequently say only gallons, so ask the supplier to confirm in litres.

How many litres is 5,000 gallons?

5,000 Imperial gallons is about 22,730 litres. 5,000 US gallons is about 18,927 litres. That is a difference of roughly 3,800 litres on the same advertised number.

How do I compare two water tanker quotes fairly?

Convert both to AED per litre delivered, then confirm they are the same water type and include the same services such as VAT, pump, hose and waiting time.

How many litres is 1,000 gallons?

About 4,546 litres Imperial, or about 3,785 litres US.

Why does this matter for my tank?

If you size a delivery from a US gallon figure but your tank was calculated in Imperial, you can be short by 20% and need an unplanned second trip.
