Suppliers quote a price per load, not per gallon. That makes two quotes almost impossible to compare at a glance — and it is where most people overpay. Here is how to convert any quote to a per-gallon figure in about ten seconds.
The calculation
Per-gallon cost = total quoted price ÷ tanker capacity in gallons.
- AED 180 for 1,500 gal = AED 0.12/gal
- AED 420 for 5,000 gal = AED 0.084/gal
- AED 750 for 10,000 gal = AED 0.075/gal
Larger loads almost always win on per-gallon cost.

Why per-gallon cost falls as the tanker gets bigger
A tanker delivery is mostly fixed cost. The driver’s time, the fuel, the filling fee, the dispatch and the return trip cost roughly the same whether the tank leaves full or half full. Spread those fixed costs over 10,000 gallons instead of 1,500 and the per-gallon figure drops sharply.
This is why splitting a large requirement into several small loads is usually the most expensive way to buy water. If you need 10,000 gallons, one large load nearly always beats three small ones — assuming your access allows the bigger vehicle.
Typical per-gallon cost by tanker size
The table below converts the price bands commonly advertised by Dubai suppliers into per-gallon figures. Treat it as a sense-check, not a tariff — there is no regulated price for tanker water in Dubai.
| Capacity | Typical advertised range | Approx. per gallon |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000–1,500 gal | AED 120–200 | AED 0.12–0.13 |
| 2,500–3,000 gal | AED 200–400 | AED 0.08–0.13 |
| 5,000 gal | AED 300–550 | AED 0.06–0.11 |
| 10,000 gal | AED 450–1,100 | AED 0.045–0.11 |
Notice how wide the 10,000 gallon band is. That spread is where comparing properly actually pays.
Three things that distort a per-gallon comparison
1. Imperial versus US gallons
A quote in US gallons is for about 17% less water than the same number of Imperial gallons. If one supplier quotes in one and one in the other, your per-gallon maths is wrong before you start. This is worth checking every time.
2. Water type
Sweet water, salt water and TSE are collected from different points and handled differently, so they price differently. Comparing a sweet-water quote against a TSE quote per gallon tells you nothing useful.
3. What the price includes
Some quotes include pumping into your tank and a reasonable hose run. Others charge for a long hose, a difficult access, or an out-of-hours slot. Ask what is in the number before dividing it.
What to ask before you compare
- Is that Imperial or US gallons?
- Sweet, salt or TSE?
- Does the price include pumping into my tank?
- Is there a charge for a long hose run or difficult access?
- Is the price different at night or on a public holiday?
Five questions, and any honest supplier will answer all of them before dispatch.

Cheapest per gallon is not always cheapest overall
If a 10,000 gallon load is superb value per gallon but your tank only holds 4,000, you are paying for water that goes nowhere. Match the load to the tank first, then optimise per-gallon cost.
A worked comparison: two real quotes
Say you are quoting a 5,000 gallon villa fill and two suppliers come back. Supplier A quotes AED 480 all in. Supplier B quotes AED 390 but adds AED 60 for a long hose run, because your tank is at the back of the plot.
On the headline number B looks 19% cheaper. On the number you actually pay, B is AED 450 against A at AED 480 — a 6% difference, not 19%. Convert both and the gap is AED 0.096 against AED 0.090 per gallon.
That is still a saving, but it is a fifth of what the headline suggested. The point is not that one supplier is dishonest; it is that quotes are structured differently and only a per-gallon figure on the delivered total lets you see it.
| Supplier A | Supplier B | |
|---|---|---|
| Quoted | AED 480 | AED 390 |
| Hose surcharge | — | AED 60 |
| Total paid | AED 480 | AED 450 |
| Per gallon | AED 0.096 | AED 0.090 |
Why the same load costs more in July
Per-gallon cost is not fixed across the year. Through the Dubai summer, household consumption rises, pools lose water to evaporation faster, and construction sites damp down more often. Demand across the city climbs while the number of vehicles stays the same.
The practical effect is less about a published price rise and more about availability. When every tanker is committed, an urgent job has to displace a planned one, and that is what carries the premium.
If your consumption is predictable, the way to hold your per-gallon cost flat through summer is to move from reactive ordering to a booked schedule before demand peaks — typically before the end of May rather than in the middle of July.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good price per gallon for water in Dubai?
Roughly AED 0.06 to AED 0.13 per Imperial gallon covers most sweet-water deliveries, with larger loads at the lower end. Anything far outside that range is worth questioning in either direction.
Why is a small tanker so much more expensive per gallon?
Because the driver time, fuel, filling fee and dispatch cost are almost identical regardless of load size. On a small load those fixed costs are spread over far fewer gallons.
Do suppliers in Dubai quote per gallon or per load?
Almost always per load. Converting to per gallon yourself is the only reliable way to compare two quotes for different capacities.
Is it cheaper to order one big tanker or several small ones?
One large load is normally cheaper per gallon, provided your access allows the larger vehicle and your tank can hold the volume.
Does the per-gallon price change by area of Dubai?
Yes. Route time and access affect cost, so the same load can price differently in Jebel Ali than in Jumeirah.
Should I compare quotes on the headline price or the total?
Always the delivered total. Surcharges for hose runs, access or timing can close most of an apparent gap, as the worked example above shows.
Does per-gallon cost change through the year?
The rate itself is fairly stable, but summer demand tightens availability, and urgent jobs displacing planned ones is where the premium appears.
