Pool Top-Ups in Dubai: How Much Water You Lose and When

A Dubai pool loses water fast in summer, and most owners underestimate how fast. The good news is that a top-up is a fraction of the cost of a fill.

Typical summer loss

An uncovered Dubai pool can lose roughly 5–10mm of depth per day in peak summer to evaporation alone.

On an 8m × 4m pool that is around 160–320 litres a day — roughly 1,000 to 2,000 gallons a month.

Where the water actually goes

Evaporation dominates in Dubai summer: high air temperature, strong sun and low humidity relative to the water surface all drive it. Wind across the surface accelerates it further, which is why exposed rooftop and open-garden pools lose more than sheltered ones.

Backwashing the filter and splash-out from use add to it, but on most villa pools evaporation is the bulk of the loss.

How much to order

Pool sizeTypical monthly summer lossSensible top-up load
6m × 3m~600–1,200 gal1,000 gal
8m × 4m~1,000–2,000 gal1,000–2,500 gal
12m × 5m~2,000–4,000 gal2,500–5,000 gal

Topping up monthly in summer is usually cheaper and easier than letting the level drop far enough to matter to the pump.

Why not to let it drop too far

If the water level falls below the skimmer intake, the pump can draw air. That is bad for the pump and it stops the filtration working properly. Keeping the level within the skimmer window is the practical reason to top up on a schedule rather than reactively.

A cover makes a substantial difference to evaporation if the pool is not in daily use.

How fast a Dubai pool actually loses water

Evaporation is the main cause, and it is seasonal. An uncovered pool in Dubai loses noticeably more in July than in January — heat, low humidity and wind all drive it. A drop of a few centimetres a week in summer is normal and is not a leak.

The rough arithmetic: every centimetre of depth across the pool surface is a real volume. On a 8m × 4m pool, one centimetre is about 320 litres, or roughly 70 gallons. Losing three centimetres a week means about 210 gallons a week to replace.

A cover changes this substantially. It is the single most effective way to cut top-up frequency in a Dubai summer.

Telling evaporation from a leak

The bucket test settles it. Fill a bucket with pool water, mark the level inside, stand it on a step so it is partly submerged, mark the pool level too, and leave both for 24 hours with the pump running as normal.

If both levels drop by the same amount, you are seeing evaporation. If the pool drops more than the bucket, water is going somewhere it should not.

Do the test before booking a series of top-ups. Repeatedly refilling a leaking pool is expensive and hides the problem rather than fixing it.

Frequently asked questions

How much water does a pool lose in Dubai summer?

Roughly 5 to 10mm of depth per day for an uncovered pool, which is around 1,000 to 2,000 gallons a month on a standard villa pool.

How often should I top up my pool in Dubai?

Monthly through summer is typical for an uncovered villa pool. Keeping the level in the skimmer window is the practical guide.

Is a pool top-up cheaper than a full fill?

Considerably. A top-up is normally one small load rather than several full ones.

Does a pool cover reduce water loss?

Yes, substantially. Covering an uncovered pool when not in use is the single biggest reduction in evaporation.

What happens if the pool level drops too low?

If it falls below the skimmer the pump can draw air, which harms the pump and stops filtration working correctly.

How much water does a Dubai pool lose to evaporation?

Several centimetres a week is normal in summer for an uncovered pool. On an 8m by 4m pool, one centimetre is roughly 70 gallons.

How do I know if my pool is leaking or just evaporating?

Use the bucket test. If the pool level drops more than a bucket of pool water left beside it for 24 hours, you have a leak rather than evaporation.
