The discharge itself is quick. What takes the time is the round trip back to the filling point between loads — and that is the part people forget when planning a pool fill.
Rough timings
- Discharge per load: 20–60 minutes
- Round trip between loads: 1–2 hours, depending on area
- Standard villa pool (2 loads): half a day is realistic

Where the time actually goes
A tanker arrives, sets up, discharges and leaves. That part is measured in tens of minutes. Then it drives back to the filling point, queues, loads, and drives back to you. On a busy day in a distant area that round trip can be longer than the discharge itself.
This is why a single large load beats two small ones on time as well as cost.
Planning a multi-load fill
| Pool | Loads | Realistic window |
|---|---|---|
| Plunge pool | 1 | 1–2 hours |
| Standard villa pool | 2 | Half a day |
| Large villa pool | 3–4 | Most of a day |
If timing matters — a handover, an event, guests arriving — book a day ahead and say so. Multiple vehicles can sometimes be scheduled in parallel.
What to do while it fills
Do not run the pump until the water level is above the skimmer intake. Running it dry or drawing air is how pumps get damaged.
Once filled, balance the chemistry before use. Freshly delivered water needs testing and dosing rather than being assumed correct.

Working out your own filling time
Two numbers decide it: the volume of the pool and how many loads that takes. Everything else is scheduling.
Pool volume in gallons is length × width × average depth in metres, multiplied by about 220. A 8m × 4m pool averaging 1.4m deep is roughly 45 cubic metres, or about 9,900 gallons.
| Pool | Approx. volume | Loads at 2,500 gal |
|---|---|---|
| 6m × 3m × 1.2m | ~4,750 gal | 2 |
| 8m × 4m × 1.4m | ~9,900 gal | 4 |
| 12m × 5m × 1.5m | ~19,800 gal | 8 |
Scheduling multiple loads sensibly
A large pool is not one delivery, it is a sequence, and the sequence is what determines the elapsed time. Back-to-back loads through a single day work well where access is easy and the vehicle can turn around quickly.
Tell the operator the total volume when you book rather than ordering one load at a time. Planned as a sequence, the loads are allocated together; ordered one by one, each is a fresh request competing with everyone else’s.
Have someone on site for the whole sequence. The most common delay on a multi-load fill is the second or third vehicle arriving to find the gate shut because the person who let the first one in has gone out.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to fill a swimming pool by tanker?
Each load discharges in roughly 20 to 60 minutes, but the round trip between loads means a standard villa pool usually takes half a day.
Can multiple tankers fill a pool at once?
Sometimes. If timing matters, book ahead and ask — parallel vehicles can shorten a large fill considerably.
Should I run the pool pump while filling?
No. Wait until the water is above the skimmer intake, otherwise the pump can draw air and be damaged.
Do I need to treat the water after filling?
Yes. Test and balance the chemistry before use rather than assuming delivered water is ready.
Is one big tanker faster than several small ones?
Yes, considerably. Each additional load adds a full round trip to the filling point.
How long does it take to fill a swimming pool with tankers?
It depends on pool volume and how many loads that needs. Book the total volume as one sequence rather than ordering load by load, so the deliveries are scheduled together.
How do I calculate my pool volume in gallons?
Length times width times average depth in metres, multiplied by about 220. An 8m by 4m pool averaging 1.4m deep is roughly 9,900 gallons.
