What warehouses actually use water for
Warehouse demand is usually modest but continuous, and it splits into a few distinct needs with different quality requirements.
- Welfare — drinking, washrooms, kitchen areas. Potable grade, non-negotiable.
- Cleaning — floors, loading bays, equipment wash-down.
- Fire systems — tank top-up and testing, where applicable.
- Landscaping — where a site has planting, often suitable for TSE.
Splitting the requirement this way usually reduces cost, because not all of it needs to be potable, and it makes the potable portion easier to keep properly documented.
Access and scheduling around operations
Warehouses are built around vehicle movement, which helps, but the yard is busy with the vehicles the business depends on. A tanker parked across a loading bay during a despatch window is a real disruption.
Fix a delivery slot outside peak despatch and receiving, and site the fill point away from the bay doors. Where the water tank is inside or behind the building, work out the hose route once and note it, rather than solving it each time.
Where a fire tank is involved, agree who is responsible for top-up and testing before it becomes urgent. It is the requirement most often assumed to be someone else’s.
